Bluetooth Upgrades

We can all agree that Bluetooth’s ease of operation and wide range makes its functionality reign supreme, however, what lies next for Bluetooth? The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) have announced updates that will bring higher speeds and mesh networking to the technology. The range of Bluetooth Smart will also increase by up to 4X, enabling greater access to a building or home. This will also increase the functionality of Bluetooth in outdoor situations. Hospitals, in particular, will see a direct data speed increase as well as a wider range of a network. “A 100% increase in speed, without increasing energy consumption, will enable faster data transfers in critical applications, such as medical devices, increasing responsiveness and lowering latency.” This is all good news as most of us run into Bluetooth problems daily.

These changes just came out this year, and it did not happen a moment too soon. The demand from both the public and industry for changes to Bluetooth has been high.  Toby Nixon, chairman of the Bluetooth SIG board of directors, said, “The technical updates planned for Bluetooth technology in 2016 will help make these expectations a reality and accelerate growth in IoT.”  With these changes being implemented, we can already see the bright future of Bluetooth and its many uses. I wonder what changes Bluetooth has in store for us next.
