Intrusion Prevention


            Intrusion Prevention is very essential in a business environment. While antivirus looks for known malicious files, an IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) scans the entire stream of network traffic to find threats by using known exploits and attack forms. An ISP protects against both and unknown threats before antivirus signatures can even be created for them. IPS is also great at detecting “drive-by” downloads of fake antivirus scanner web pages and other forms of malware. This is all very important as a hacker can carry out an attack right after gaining access to a network. If an IPS is set up, it can take immediate action by commands of the network administrator.
            In the business environment, added security is a necessary thing. Nowadays, threats are more sophisticated, and hackers are becoming more skilled every day.  The number of devices a business can have connected to a network also dramatically increases the risk of attack. The way one accesses the computers of a network also have potential security risks whether a business uses cards, passwords, or even retinal scans. Firewalls and other forms of intrusion prevention have all been upgraded to fight the continuous rise of network risks however nothing can ever really prevent the risk of an attack altogether.
            There are numerous tips in ensuring a business has a IPS that is sophisticated enough to fight against the many forms of intrusion. The first thing one can do is to properly train all employees on safe computing practices with emphasis on social media and email use. Another great tip is to develop and promote policies for the multiple security risks that can occur. This includes strict policies on employee-owned devices as well.  Keeping all network users updated with the latest threats and providing them with the tools to instantly inform security personnel when a potential problem arises is also a great recommendation.
            What does the future hold for IPS? Hackers become more skilled every day and the programs and malware they use become more sophisticated. To combat these growing threats, new forms of IPS’s must be implemented and upgraded. Dr. Gene Shultz states, “more advanced response capabilities will allow users and organizations to choose from a wide range of response mechanisms as well as fine-tune them to more closely meet their business and operational needs.” He also says that IPS’s are in the process to play a more significant role in forensics data preservation by adding data to a forensics server while protecting the data’s integrity. It is safe to say IPS technology has a long way to go before it can prevent malicious attacks completely.
