Review: UniFi ‘USW-Ultra-60W’ 8-Port Managed Switch

Hello all. My boss was kind enough to let me test another new device from UniFi, the Ultra 60W 8-port switch. As I haven’t yet replaced all of my devices with UniFi (the rack is done, but more to do throughout the house), I am currently using a cheap NETGEAR ProSAFE GS105 5-port switch at my desk to route internet (from my main UniFi 48-port switch) to my main PC, work laptop, and home lab projects that often take place on my desk. So, it is safe to say the UniFi USW-Ultra-60W is quite the improvement from my previous switch; however, this may lead me to be more favorable to the product in this review (I will try to keep my UniFi fanboy status under wraps).

Packaging

UniFi’s latest addition to its lineup, the USW-Ultra-60W 8-port switch, is a powerhouse designed to meet the demands of modern networking setups, particularly in PoE (Power over Ethernet) applications. Building upon the foundation of previous models, this switch brings significant improvements in both performance and functionality.

The packaging, design, and construction materials utilized left me with little to complain about, and in typical UniFi fashion, the final installed product looks like a work of art.

Everything included

Differences from Previous Models: One of the key differentiators of the USW-Ultra-60W is its enhanced PoE capabilities. While previous models might have offered PoE support, the USW-Ultra-60W takes it to the next level with its 60W power budget; this means it can power a wider range of devices, including high-power PoE devices such as PTZ cameras, access points, and VoIP phones, without the need for additional power injectors or PoE adapters.

So cute!

Features and Capabilities: The USW-Ultra-60W boasts a range of features that make it a versatile networking solution. With its 7 GbE PoE+ output ports and optional PoE++ input ethernet port, this switch provides ample connectivity options for small to medium-sized networks. The inclusion of PoE+ ports ensures that compatible devices can be powered directly from the switch, simplifying installation and reducing clutter.

Moreover, this switch is part of the UniFi ecosystem, meaning it can be seamlessly integrated with other UniFi devices and managed through the UniFi Controller software; this centralized management platform allows for easy configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of the entire network.

Rear port is much appreciated

Strengths:

  • High Power Budget: The 60W power budget of the USW-Ultra-60W sets it apart from many other switches in its class, making it suitable for a wide range of PoE applications.
  • UniFi Integration: Being part of the UniFi ecosystem means effortless integration with other UniFi devices and centralized management through the UniFi Controller software.
  • Compact Design: The compact form factor of the switch makes it ideal for deployment in environments with limited space.
Testing time!

Weaknesses:

  • Limited Port Count: While eight ports may suffice for many small to medium-sized networks, larger deployments may require switches with a higher port count.
  • Cost: The advanced features and capabilities of the USW-Ultra-60W come at a premium compared to basic switches, which may be a consideration for budget-conscious consumers.

Best Use Cases (PoE Applications): The USW-Ultra-60W excels in PoE applications where high power delivery and reliable performance are essential. Some ideal use cases include:

  • Security Camera Systems: The switch can power multiple high-resolution PTZ cameras without the need for additional power sources.
  • Wireless Access Points: Deploying wireless access points throughout a building becomes more straightforward with the USW-Ultra-60W, as it can power them directly.
  • VoIP Phone Systems: Businesses can benefit from the simplicity of powering VoIP phones via PoE, reducing cable clutter and installation complexity.

Note: Take the below speed tests lightly. While I did run them multiple times, I would imagine there really wouldn’t be a difference in speed.

USW-Ultra’s port management

In summary, the UniFi USW-Ultra-60W 8-port switch is a robust networking solution that offers advanced PoE capabilities, seamless integration with the UniFi ecosystem, and a compact design. While the USW-Ultra may not be suitable for every network environment due to its port count and cost, it excels in PoE applications where reliability and performance are paramount.

While the price of this switch is rather high, at least when compared with other brands, the UniFi ecosystem has been nothing but amazing in my experience; so, I think the premium to stay within the brand is well worth it. I really enjoy being able to manage the switch as my GS105 didn’t have that capability. The USW-Ultra worked right out of the box and had the quickest adoption time I believe I have seen yet. While there is little to configure, I am quite excited to play around with some VLANs while having two separate UniFi switches for the first time.

Overall, I think the UniFi USW-Ultra-60W 8-port switch is an excellent entry in an already well-built product line. While the price could definitely be lower, I feel that for most situations this switch can beneficial with its powerful PoE abilities, leading one to not need to purchase often-expensive non-PoE options, as well as offering remote management in a tiny package.
