My New Car: A Review of the 2017 BMW 750i xDrive (Project Sport Limo)

As I was moving to Colorado, my 2016 Subaru WRX STI, unfortunately, got into an accident, thus giving me a reason to upgrade! As I have owned several BMWs in my life, I felt it was time to get back into the driver’s seat of a German-engineered beauty. This time around, I wanted something a little more grown-up, while not sacrificing power. As I have loved the BMW 7 series ever since I watched the movie, The Transporter, I felt this was an excellent time to fulfill one of my dreams of owning one. I managed to find a low-mile 2017 750I with excellent service records near me, and it was a match made in heaven. While the car’s original MSRP was $107k, I got it for quite a bargain. In this post, I will share some of my thoughts about the vehicle.

RIP

In the world of luxury sedans, the 2017 BMW 750i xDrive stands as an epitome of power, elegance, and cutting-edge technology. With its exceptional engine performance, advanced features, and a plethora of optional packages, this flagship BMW model continues to impress even years after its release.

Engine Performance:

Under the hood of the 2017 BMW 750i xDrive lies a formidable twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, which effortlessly churns out an exhilarating 445 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, this powerhouse propels the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.3 seconds, showcasing its sporty DNA despite its luxurious demeanor. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensures optimal traction and stability, enhancing the overall driving experience and instilling confidence in various road conditions. While I do not drive it hard, the power is quite the improvement from my WRX STI, allowing this large and heavy vehicle to provide quite sporty characteristics.

Technological Innovations:

The 2017 BMW 750i xDrive sets new benchmarks in terms of technology integration, boasting a host of cutting-edge features that elevate both convenience and safety. The iDrive infotainment system takes center stage, with its intuitive 10.2-inch touchscreen display and a user-friendly interface. The system supports gesture control, allowing drivers to perform various functions with simple hand movements. Additionally, the inclusion of a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system ensures an immersive audio experience for all occupants. In most of my vehicles, I upgrade the audio system, but Harman Kardon’s 600w system is currently more than adequate.

BMW’s suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, Active Driving Assistant Plus, equips the 750i xDrive with features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and more. The vehicle’s ability to maintain lane position and adapt to changing traffic conditions adds an extra layer of safety on every journey.

Adaptive Air Suspension:

The 2017 BMW 750i xDrive features an adaptive air suspension system that adapts to varying road conditions and driver preferences; this intelligent suspension system utilizes air springs at each corner of the vehicle, working in conjunction with electronically controlled dampers to deliver an unparalleled balance of comfort and agility.

Comfort Mode:

In Comfort mode, the air suspension prioritizes a smooth and luxurious ride. The system automatically adjusts the ride height, ensuring optimal comfort and minimizing road imperfections. The air springs provide excellent shock absorption, effectively isolating passengers from harsh impacts and vibrations. Whether you’re navigating potholes or encountering uneven surfaces, the air suspension in the 750i xDrive cushions the ride, creating a serene and comfortable environment for all occupants.

Sport Mode:

Engaging Sport mode transforms the 750i xDrive’s air suspension, optimizing it for a more dynamic driving experience. The suspension system lowers the vehicle’s ride height, reducing body roll and enhancing stability during spirited driving; this lower center of gravity improves cornering capabilities, allowing for confident and precise handling. The adaptive dampers work in tandem with the air springs to provide responsive feedback, maintaining a perfect balance between comfort and sportiness.

Adjustable Ride Height:

One of the standout features of the air suspension in the 2017 BMW 750i xDrive is its ability to adjust the ride height. The system offers multiple ride height settings, allowing drivers to tailor the vehicle’s ground clearance to their specific needs. Whether it’s traversing rough terrain or navigating steep driveways, the adjustable ride height ensures the vehicle remains poised and undeterred, providing peace of mind in various driving scenarios.

Self-Leveling Function:

The air suspension in the 750i xDrive incorporates a self-leveling function that constantly adjusts the ride height based on the vehicle’s load. This feature ensures that the sedan maintains optimal ride quality and handling characteristics, regardless of the number of occupants or amount of cargo onboard. The self-leveling capability enhances both comfort and stability, eliminating any sagging or uneven weight distribution.

Accent Lighting:

The 2017 BMW 750i’s interior is adorned with thoughtfully placed accent lighting, further elevating the ambiance, and emphasizing its attention to detail. Soft, ambient lighting gently illuminates the cabin, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. With customizable colors and intensity, occupants can tailor the lighting to suit their mood or preference, whether it’s a soothing blue hue for a relaxed journey or a vibrant color for a more energetic vibe.

Display Key:

The BMW Display Key is a remarkable accessory that brings a touch of innovation and convenience to the ownership experience of the 2017 BMW 750i. As an owner of this luxury vehicle, I had the opportunity to utilize this advanced key and was impressed with its features and functionality.

The first thing that catches the eye is the key’s sleek and elegant design, which perfectly complements the overall aesthetics of the 750i; its compact size and smooth lines make it comfortable to hold, while the premium materials used in its construction exude a sense of luxury.

One of the standout features of the BMW Display Key is its integrated touchscreen display. This vibrant and high-resolution screen provides access to a range of functions, making it more than just a traditional key. From the display, you can easily check the status of your vehicle, including fuel level, remaining range, and even whether the doors and windows are locked or unlocked. This feature is incredibly useful, especially when you want to quickly assess your car’s status without having to physically approach it.

Moreover, the key allows you to remotely control certain vehicle functions through BMW’s ConnectedDrive services. For example, you can precondition the interior temperature, lock or unlock the doors, or even locate your car in a crowded parking lot; this level of control and convenience adds a whole new dimension to the ownership experience, especially in situations where you may want to warm up or cool down your car before getting inside.

The key’s rechargeable battery is another notable advantage. With its long-lasting performance, I found that I rarely needed to worry about running out of battery power. Additionally, the key comes with a wireless charging feature, enabling effortless recharging when placed on a compatible charging pad.

While the BMW Display Key is undeniably impressive, there are a few areas where it could be further improved. Firstly, the touchscreen can be prone to fingerprints and smudges, requiring frequent cleaning to maintain its pristine appearance. Additionally, the menu navigation on the key’s display could be more intuitive, as it can take some time to familiarize yourself with the layout and locate specific functions.

Heads-Up Display:

The Heads-Up Display (HUD) in the 2017 BMW 750i is a remarkable feature that adds a new level of convenience and safety to the driving experience. As an owner of this luxury vehicle, I had the pleasure of experiencing the HUD firsthand and was thoroughly impressed by its functionality and effectiveness.

The HUD in the BMW 750i is designed to project important driving information directly onto the windshield, within the driver’s line of sight; this means that vital details such as vehicle speed, navigation instructions, and even collision warnings are effortlessly displayed, eliminating the need to divert your attention from the road. The HUD significantly enhances safety by allowing you to keep your eyes focused ahead while still staying informed.

One of the most notable aspects of the HUD is its clarity and visibility, even in various lighting conditions. The projected information appears sharp and vibrant, ensuring that it can be easily read without causing distraction or discomfort. Additionally, the HUD’s adjustable brightness and position allow for customization, catering to individual preferences and ensuring optimal visibility for different drivers.

The information displayed on the HUD is comprehensive and customizable, providing valuable data that enhances the driving experience. In addition to speed and navigation instructions, the HUD can also present incoming calls, entertainment details, and even alerts from various driver-assistance systems. The wealth of information at a glance allows for better situational awareness and reduces the need to look away from the road or the central infotainment display.

Furthermore, the integration between the HUD and the vehicle’s other systems is seamless. The navigation directions are displayed in a manner that appears to overlay the road ahead, providing clear guidance without the need to constantly shift focus between the dashboard and the external environment; this integration enhances the overall driving experience and ensures that vital information is readily available without causing distraction.

While the HUD in the BMW 750i is undoubtedly impressive, there are a few areas that could benefit from refinement. The size of the projected information, though generally sufficient, could be slightly larger to improve legibility, especially for drivers with less-than-perfect eyesight. Additionally, some users may find the HUD’s adjustment controls slightly cumbersome to access and use while driving.

Optional Packages:

The 2017 BMW 750i xDrive offers a range of optional packages, allowing owners to customize their driving experience to their liking. Noteworthy packages my car includes are:

a) Luxury Seating Package: This package enhances passenger comfort with multi-contour front seats featuring heating, ventilation, and massage functions. Rear-seat passengers are treated to heated seats with power adjustments, ensuring a relaxing ride for all occupants.

b) Executive Package: Designed for those who appreciate ultimate luxury, the Executive Package introduces features such as front ventilated seats, ceramic controls, a power rear sunshade, and rear side window shades.

b) Interior Design Packages 1 and 2:

The Interior Design Package focuses on enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the cabin. It introduces an array of high-quality materials, including Nappa leather upholstery, contrast stitching, and fine wood or metal inlays. The harmonious combination of luxurious elements creates a refined and visually striking atmosphere that exudes sophistication.

c) Cold Weather Package

Front & Rear Heated Seats, Heated Steering Wheel

d) Driver Assistance Plus

Active Driving Assistant, Surround View w/3D View, Blind Spot Detection, Parking Assistant w/Active Park Distance Control, Frontal Collision Warning, city collision mitigation, Speed Limit Info, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Lane Departure Warning

Current/Future Modifications:

So far, I have only upgraded to K&N panel air filters, as the stock intake is well-designed already. I have also performed some tuning using BimmerCode and other programs to change a few things, such as:

  • Rolls Royce Audio Tones
  • Alpina B7 Gauges + 200mph speedometer
  • Video in Motion (can play movies while driving)
  • Sport + modes
  • Etc.

Next, I will turn my attention to the exhaust, replacing the dual resonators with straight pipe and opting for dual MagnaFlow mufflers. As I am still under an extended warranty, I won’t bother with anything else for now. Once the warranty is up, I will throw a JB4 and tune on there, which boasts power gains of up to 100hp and 140tq to the wheels on a stock vehicle. Downpipes would further increase power, but I believe the tune alone will do more than enough.

For appearance upgrades, I would like to get some vinyl wrap for all the chrome on the vehicle, as I am not a fan; the optional ‘M Sport Package’ includes this, and I love the look. The only flaw on the vehicle is some road rash on some rims, so either repairing and powder coating the stock rims black or getting new ones would be ideal.

Negatives:

Like any BMW, your monthly lease payments are only a small portion of the total cost of maintaining these machines. The N63 engine is notorious for issues, typically stemming from overheating or fluid loss due to the odd placement of the downpipes and their close proximity to the engine. Thankfully with the N63TU and other new variations, most of these issues have been fixed. However, I still chose to opt for an extended warranty just in case.

One other drawback is the sheer size of the vehicle. My family has two Subaru SUVs (a new electric Solterra and an Outback), and the BMW is so much larger than both. While larger sedans are more of my style, the mass of the BMW is quite different than the small and agile WRX STI that I had previously. I did manage to get it in the garage, but just barely!

My only other complaints about the vehicle are the numerous cameras and proximity sensors placed around the vehicle; every so often, one will have a bug, which is usually quickly fixable (cleaning sensor/reset ECU). However, twice now while backing up, the camera thought there was a car behind me when there wasn’t, and then the car just decided to stop on its own. Always fun!

Conclusion:

The 2017 BMW 750i xDrive is a remarkable luxury sedan that seamlessly combines blistering performance, advanced technology, and a range of optional packages to suit diverse preferences. Its powerful engine, innovative technology features, and optional packages make it a standout choice in the luxury sedan segment. If you are seeking an exhilarating driving experience with top-of-the-line comfort and cutting-edge technology, the 2017 BMW 750i xDrive should be high on your list.

As the newer generation 7-series lineup is hideous, in my opinion, and the fact that previous generations had the known-to-be-horrible N63 (non-TU, before all of the improvements/fixed issues), the 2017 model hits the sweet spot.
